There's another reason to lift the ban in NJ against pumping your own gas. Working in lovely Camden, NJ, for 16 years, I frequently stopped to fill up at one of the ubiquitous gas stations along US 30, a few minutes east of the Ben Franklin Bridge. I experienced a rash of credit card theft issues, which I suspect were caused by employees (and maybe their employers) installing corrupt credit card scanners in gas pumps. If you're pumping your gas, you can spot the signs. If not, you cannot. I moved to cash - problem solved.

Second, nobody complained about pumping their own gas when NJ's gas taxes were among the lowest in the nation. Democrats in Trenton fixed that, so the advantage has mostly disappeared.

Gov. Jon Corzine proposed eliminating the ban almost twenty years ago, but he was severely rebuffed. His approval ranking took a hit. He apologized for the idea in his next "State of the State" Address. "Jersey girls don't pump gas," he said.

You’re right of course but I admit I hate pumping gas.
