There is an important missing piece in his thesis, which is that liberals/progressives and their predecessors (socialists/communists) believe that humans, like clay, can be molded to serve their idea of society. Libertarians (Conservatives are a less clear grouping) reflect classical liberalism's view that human's possess intrinsic will and should be taught principles, ideals, philosophical/religious values, but cannot be forced shaped into a singular collective vision. Free societies allow this freedom, while collectivist societies see it as a threat to their ideological visions.
