You and me both brother. I started doing a dry month or two once or twice a year five years back. Last summer I made the big decision to stop completely. It's been great, better moods, sleep has improved, blood pressure down. I may drink again some day but for now I'm happy
Good move, man. Glad to hear it's working out. I haven't had dry month since I was 14. So I'm curious how this will go. If you get over to the Twin Cities, hit me up. Haven't see you in ages. Hope all is well.
Alcohol takes more than it gives; slowly taking our freedom and health. It is the only ‘drug’ people feel the need to justify not taking when within a group. But, not drinking doesn’t make us uncomfortable -being the only one drinking makes us uncomfortable. You can miss a lot of life when in an alcohol haze. Good luck.
My parents had drinking problems, so I was extraordinarily wary around alcohol, especially because I have a tendency towards addictive behaviors. So I never drank through high school and college. However, during my senior year in college, I had an Italian math professor who was quite the wine connoisseur and offered an extracurricular wine tasting seminar which I attended with my girlfriend. While I couldn’t afford wine as a poor grad student, after joining an ibank with a Wall Street expense account, I had the means to taste incredible vineyards and vintages. Still never partook in other spirits and never drank wine alone, but only to pair with fine food. Reaching my ‘50s, I finally noticed a slowly expanding waist line (despite no increase in calories and consistent rigorous athletics) and decided serious lifestyle changes were required to maintain health through approaching older age. So I completely cut out drinking and dinner (down to two meals a day: breakfast and lunch). While I do occasionally miss the fifth food group during a great meal, my health and sleep quality drastically improved and am back to my freshman college weight.
There has been a lot of growth in non alcoholic beers and cocktails. I find them helpful when socializing in a bar or restaurant, and they are not as terrible as they once were.
I'm down to once a month, with rare exceptions. It's been about a year now, I think. I don't have any desire to quit completely, but want to be in charge of it and not cede control to the alcohol.

There is something marvelous about wines and vineyards, and German Purity Law beers ...
The lifelong trick I guess is moderation, now considered as only ten units a week, never more than two a day ...
