‘We’re Experiencing Real-Time Sovietization’: Taibbi on the Media Blackout of CIA’s Election Meddling

The US intelligence apparatus meddled in a presidential election—and they’re no longer even trying to hide it. And that's not even the most terrifying part.

On Wednesday I published my most read Substack article ever. It was one of those stories too hard to believe.

A former CIA chief admitted to Congress in sworn testimony that he orchestrated the infamous “Russian disinformation” letter, which suggested that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Putin’s handiwork, after a call he had with a senior advisor for the Biden campaign, Tony Blinken (the current Secretary of State).

And he did it with the intent to help Biden win.

Under questioning from members of the Judiciary Committee, former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell said one of his explicit purposes in writing the letter was to help Joe Biden.

“You wanted to help the Vice President,” Rep. Jim Jordan asked, “why?”

“Because I wanted him to win the election,” Morrell responded.

It’s a stunning and breathtakingly arrogant response.

After falsely accusing the Russians of concocting the Hunter Biden laptop story as an elaborate ruse to meddle in US elections, the former CIA spook blithely admits a primary goal of his letter was to help Biden win the election—and that he wrote the letter after consulting the Biden campaign.

This is, needless to say, a big deal.

“By any marker, this is an enormous news story,” writes Matt Taibbi at Racket News.

Indeed.

And Taibbi, a longtime feature writer for Rolling Stone, is also correct when he says the scandal here matches and perhaps exceeds Watergate on almost every level.

“Does it reach into the current White House? Check.

Was it a craven attempt to subvert the electoral process. Check again.

Did a presidential candidate engineer a massive public deception? Yes, resoundingly.

Did it involve intelligence agencies? Yes—and these weren’t amateurs like Nixon’s plumbers. These were fifty of the most powerful people in the intelligence world, including five former heads or acting heads…”

That this happened is frightening. The US intelligence apparatus meddled in a presidential election—and they’re no longer even trying to hide it.

What’s even more terrifying, however, is that nobody is talking about it. Media have all but completely blacked out the story. There has been barely barely a whisper of it in legacy media.

“We are experiencing real-time Sovietization,” says Taibbi.

I’m not one given to hyperbole, but I think Taibbi is right. We’re witnessing naked electoral corruption, orchestrated from the highest levels of power in America. It’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before, at least not in my lifetime.

And we’re watching the media remain silent about it, either because they are complicit in the lie, or because they want to protect Biden, or they’re too afraid to share the truth (perhaps all three).

What do we do in the face of this? I take solace in the words Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the famous Soviet dissident, who reminds us the path back to truth and sanity begins with ourselves.

“The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie,” Solzhenitsyn wrote. “One word of truth outweighs the world.”

So that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to keep looking for the truth and sharing it. And I’m going to refuse to participate in the lie.

This is good. As I get older, I am getting naturally less agreeable, and as someone who has always revered truth and reality, I am making it a point to speak truth more and more, even if it costs me. I just don't give too many fucks any more.
