'I Wanted [Biden] to Win:' Former CIA Deputy Director on Why He Orchestrated 'Russian Disinformation' Letter
Tipping elections and overthrowing governments is what the CIA does. But watching it in plain sight is stunning.
Weeks before the 2020 presidential election, dozens of former US intel officers signed an open letter saying they saw the Kremlin’s hand at work in the Hunter Biden laptop story, saying it had all the earmarks of a Russian disinformation operation.
“If we are right,” they added, “this is Russia trying to influence how Americans vote in this election, and we believe strongly that Americans need to be aware of this.”
We of course know today that this was not true. We’ve known for more than a year that the laptop was authentic, and that Russia had nothing to do with it.
It also appears it was not Russia “trying to influence how Americans vote” in 2020. It was the dozens of former US intel officers, including Michael Morell, the former US deputy director of the CIA who journalist Matt Taibbi says “appears to have organized the open letter.”
Morell, it turns out, was interviewed by the House Committee on the Judiciary and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. According to a letter written by Rep. Jim Jordan, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Morell told the committee he decided to write the statement after a conversation he had with Anthony Blinken, the current Secretary of State who then served as a senior advisor to the Biden campaign.
Question: …prior to [Secretary Blinken’s] call, you – you did not have any intent to write this statement?
A: I did not.
Q: Okay. So his call triggered –
A: It did, yes.
Morell testified that this communication with Blinken was not the only one he had with the Biden campaign. According to the letter, he also received a call from Biden campaign chair Steve Ricchetti, who thanked him for writing the statement.
Morell, according the letter, was asked specifically why he wrote the statement. His answer is stunning.
“There were two intents. One intent was to share our concern with the American people that the Russians were playing on this issue; and, two, it was [to] help Vice President Biden.”
Jordan asked Morrell why he wanted to help Biden.
“Because I wanted him to win the election,” Morrell responded.
The letter can be read below. To be clear, it states that the former deputy director of the CIA orchestrated the open letter accusing Russia of spreading “disinformation” 1) after a call with a senior advisor for the Biden campaign; 2) with the intent of helping Joe Biden win the election.
How this is not the biggest story in America I don’t know. It’s a lot more important than Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon losing their jobs.
The letter shows former CIA officials admitting they communicated directly with the Biden Campaign, wanted Biden to win, and orchestrated a (false) story about Russia being behind Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Tipping elections and overthrowing governments is what the CIA does, of course. As readers know, I’ve been reading David Talbot’s book The Devil’s Chessboard, which details the agency’s rotten history.
But normally it’s done in other countries and done secretly. To see former CIA officials admit to these machinations under oath is shocking. And just as shocking is the media’s silence on the revelation. (More on that later.)
