I've long believed we're living in a society closer to Brave New World than 1984. Just look at all the mind-numbing activities and pleasures out there - sports, gambling, alcohol, feel-good drugs, you name it.
"The only moral purpose of the law is the protection of life, liberty, and property..." this sentence I think really struck home. My husband and I used to be pure libertarian until we witnessed Gary Johnson's moral flaccidity when it came to abortion, and we realized that libertarian ism only works with a moral, decent people. Unfortunately we've witnessed a large number of people who are perfectly willing to trash their own lives and the lives of everyone around them. They have no "E-brake", no "self-regulation" no self control. The law has to step in. Increasingly, the law seems to be in the business of parenting adults rather than upholding justice. Aldous Huxley's world is looking less and less surreal.
Sadly I believe Huxley is correct on the methods for obtaining “compliance”. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is another worthwhile read and cautionary tale.
