So just to clarify as I suffer from the same demonology issues as Marx did. It is called Hidradenitis Suppurtiva. Living with it in the 1850's must had to be psychologically and mentally devastating (thus his personality especially with lack of medical science at that time). It still can be today. There is no cure has the body perpetually turns on you, making you in perpetual pain. The pus and clogged sweat pores from the disease will alter your body odor to likes beyond human understanding for some. At time the disease will temporarily eradicate the ability to move and function as a human being is expected to. It is a genetic disorder, he was born with it.

Personally I as many other believe that if he did not suffer from this disease, the world and its history just might have been a little different.

I read that book. There's a good case to be made for demon possession, since he displays many of the characteristics. They don't all act like Linda Blair on The Exorcist.
