This kind of champagne socialist rich kid is very typical, commonplace today. Reminds me of Patty Hearst and many, many others.

I know that Roth is one of the great American writers, but even though I am no prude, “Portnoy’s Complaint”, left a bad taste. Maybe I should give him another try with

“American Pastoral”.

There is an interesting aspect to Portnoys Complaint.Roth was not a conservative but in the novel you’ll see a certain impatience with standard issue liberalism.The part of the book when he is in Israel is particularly interesting. Portnoy is shown to be rather ridiculous character.The bourgeois liberalism of his Background is revealed as a bit absurd. Also Roth is kind of interesting on race. He wasn’t woke.
