I don't see that nationalism is separate from patriotism. A nationalist is someone who doesn't want to be replaced in his own country by third world illegal aliens. He doesn't desire power over any one or any other nation. He only wants to preserve his own. A patriot is someone who revers his country and the founding documents and history of his country and recognizes that mistakes were made and tries to right the wrongs within the framework of the founding ideals. Communists want the entire world to be communist and are willing to kill every last resister to make that happen.
