In a 1978 interview, Superman director Richard Donner (1930-2021) explained how he came to appreciate the "conservative attitude of what Superman stands for."
Excellent article and these paragraphs especially:
"Many think liberty is at the heart of Americanism, and it is. But if liberty is America’s left hand, individualism is its right."
“Individualism is a philosophy that views people first and foremost as unique individuals rather than as members of a group,” write Sanchez and FEE managing editor Patrick Carroll. “It emphasizes the importance of independence, individuality, and autonomy.”
And yet so many of our institutions are built on the framework of Utilitarianism, which at its core is anathema to individualism. It's a big part of what keeps pulling us down into socialistic dystopia.

An interesting point. Last night I was watching Minority Report, and the mantra was "Pre-Crime: it works".
Utilitarians rarely ask the obvious folllw up to such arguments: "works for whom?"
The world in Minority Report is a dystopia because individual rights have given way to the conception of a collective good.
