I think civil virtue and critical thinking are crucial. Christian virtue might work for Christians. Other folks of other beliefs might prefer their own religious virtues. Anything that makes us better human beings with empathy and compassion for others and a willingness to act for the greater good helps make us a better society.

Without moral realism, Sagan’s warnings fall on the “irrational” side of the ledger, since good and bad are purely opinions.
