Orwell’s brush with totalitarianism, war, and state propaganda left him terrified that “the very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world.”
Orwell actually fought in Spain on the Republican side. He got shot in the neck while there. His book An Homage to Catalonia is a moir of his adventures. He became disillusioned by the efforts of Stalin and Soviet agents to wipeout the anarchists who supposedly were allies with them against Franco's forces. The Soviets fought the anarchists more ruthlessly than they did the Nationalists.
Nice article. I've written about Orwell here on Substack as well. See https://mattspivey.substack.com/p/podcast-chat-about-george-orwell and here https://mattspivey.substack.com/p/1984-x-4 if you are interested.
