Once upon a time I might have agreed with you. But decriminalizing drugs turned my city into a hellhole.

The fact is nobody comes to stop someone from harming someone else while on drugs. No one stops anyone from pooping on the sidewalk or performing lewd or violent acts in broad daylight.

Quality of life is destroyed for everyone.

The harms of drug addiction reach far beyond the individual.

Great article. As someone who was young and influenceable during the “Just Say No” campaign of the Reagans, I bought in to the notion of tougher laws needed against controlled substances. However, I have come to understand this cure is worse than the disease. I tend to support decriminalization rather legalization, and defer to Portugal vs Amsterdam as proof to which has more long term success. Nothing is perfect, and addiction will always be an issue. However, shifting the focus to counseling rather than incarceration has shown the most positive and sustainable results
