Knowing I was to retire 4 years back, a sweet young couple (my daughter and son-in-law) invited me to join them on their rural adventure. Done with Seattle, they poured over many thousand real estate ads. But prices were climbing in Washington and Oregon, as many other ‘refugees’ intended to also escape to outer regions.

I was surprised that they made bid on a farm in rural Alabama.

Now we appreciate a bit of paradise, at the edge of ‘The Bankhead’, not far from Muscle Shoals.

Cost of living is way lower.

Gas less than $3/gal.

Property tax…. (Us new folk seem to ask universally, “is that per month?”) No, that’s per year.

A very affordable high speed fiber optic network, since last year.

Sweetest God fearing people as neighbors. ( pulled our stuck tractor out of mud several times)

My only complaint is twofold: it can get very cold in winter for such a southern latitude, and,…. Fire Ants!
