Laughter is tonic for the soul, especially in dark times.
Our world is pretty dark these days.
We have wars in Europe and the Middle East again. The economy is a hot mess and the federal debt approaching $34 trillion. Our political leaders are insane and our institutions are corrupt. Gender confusion in children and mass shootings have begun to feel commonplace.
This is not the world I grew up in, and that makes me feel sad sometimes. Because I think the world I grew up in was pretty great, and the one my kids are inheriting is not in a great many ways.
All that said, I don’t believe in despair, and I recognize that the world was never a perfect. In fact, the world has been a lot worse in some pretty important ways for most of history.
Moreover, I think the the stoics had it right when they said enjoying the things we have is a key to human happiness. Focusing on all the problems in our world isn’t a path to happiness, but finding pleasure in the little things is.
It can be found in the beauty of a summer sunset. Gazing at the stars on a clear night. Or taking a walk in your neighborhood as October leaves fall to the ground around you like slowly descending helicopters (as I did today).
Laughter, also, is a great tonic for the soul, I’ve found.
The bummer is there’s not a lot of funny movies or TV shows being made anymore, which I why I found myself watching a lot of older movies and shows for laughs. (South Park is an exception.)
