Thanks, good FEE article, a great resource. Add the Mises Institute, for even worse U.S. criminal government murders (Washington, District of Criminals) carried out for the "Grater Good".

“Economics of Prohibition

“Naturally, the starng point for the economics of drug prohibion is Mark Thornton’s The Economics of Prohibition , which can be read online for free thanks to the Mises Instute. Dr. Thornton’s work was groundbreaking in that he idenfied what is now called “The Iron Law of Prohibion,” demonstrang that prohibions of intoxicang substances lead to increases in potency. Although Dr. Thornton’s work is path-breaking, the most thorough single volume on the economics of the drug war is Bruce Benson and David Rasmussen’s The Economic Anatomy of a Drug War (Lanham, MA: Rowman & Lilefield, 1994). I menon this as that best single volume because it devotes a chapter to Dr. Thornton’s research, but it also adds relevant research regarding the criminal jusce system and how it is affected by the War on Drugs. Addionally, Jeffrey Miron’s Drug War Crimes: The Consequences of Prohibition (Oakland: Independent Instute, 2004) is a short and useful overview of the effects of drug prohibition on crime.”

Excellent article. I might add, though, that they are still doing this. Here in Mexico, one can buy 96% pure alcohol, non-denatured, for about USD6 (120 pesos). In the states, manufactuers have two choices: poison (denature) it, or buy a tax stamp for it (Everclear). That's why so many people use toxic products like isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting, rather than the one alcohol tolerated well, within limits, by the human body.
