There are some highly intelligent AI-doomers, such as Zvi Mowshowitz, who seemingly strongly believe in the “AI kills everyone” scenario. To paraphrase their argument, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to properly align the incentives of AI with humanity. Absent that alignment, only the most intelligent species survives. This doesn’t necessarily imply the Skynet scenario - it could be as silly, yet serious, as AI designing nano bots to turn all matter into a giant calculator to generate every last digit of Pi. Musk seems to be heading in the direction of the “if you can’t beat them, join them” cyborg option. The reality is that AI is coming whether we like it or not. I suspect the future will be vastly better as a result, but as you mentioned, there will be plenty of creative destruction along the way.
